Getting to Vieques for Mosquito Bay

Mosquito Bay is on Vieques, an island off Puerto Rico’s east coast, not something you can reach directly from San Juan in one evening. Plan for an overnight stay, not a day trip.

Getting there

You have two practical options:

• Ferry from Ceiba. The Puerto Rico Maritime Transport Authority runs a passenger ferry between Ceiba, on the main island, and Vieques. Ceiba itself is roughly an hour and a half from San Juan by car. Ferry schedules and prices change, so check the current timetable directly before you plan around a specific departure.
• Flight to Vieques Airport (VQS). Small regional carriers fly between San Juan and Vieques. This is faster than the ferry-plus-drive combination but costs more.

Why you need to stay overnight

Bio bay tours run after dark, and the last ferry back to the main island typically departs Vieques in the evening, before a night tour would end. Book a room on Vieques for at least one night rather than trying to do this as a day trip. This also gives you a buffer if your tour gets rescheduled due to weather.

Getting around once you’re there

Vieques is a real island with limited public transportation. Most visitors rent a car, a Jeep, or use local taxis (públicos) to get around, including to and from your tour’s meeting point. Confirm with your accommodation or your tour operator what transportation options exist for your specific dates.

Where tours depart from

The Mosquito Bay operators featured on this site depart from a few different points on the island, mostly around Esperanza and Isabel Segunda. None offers San Juan pickup, since you will already be on the island by the time your tour starts.
