Getting to Vieques for Mosquito Bay

Mosquito Bay is on Vieques, an island off Puerto Rico’s east coast. You can reach it from San Juan and get back the same night, but only one way, and it leaves no room for anything to go wrong. For most people an overnight on Vieques is the better plan.

Getting there

You have two practical options:

• Ferry from Ceiba. The Puerto Rico Maritime Transport Authority runs a passenger ferry between Ceiba, on the main island, and Vieques. Ceiba itself is roughly an hour and a half from San Juan by car. Ferry schedules and prices change, so check the current timetable directly before you plan around a specific departure.
• Flight to Vieques Airport (VQS). Small regional carriers fly between San Juan and Vieques. This is faster than the ferry-plus-drive combination but costs more.

Both options start with a flight into San Juan, so when to fly into San Juan decides your dates before this leg does.

Can you do it in one night from San Juan?

Yes, with conditions. A few San Juan tour companies sell a same-night package: a van from San Juan late in the morning, the afternoon ferry from Ceiba, a beach and dinner on Vieques, the earliest bio bay tour of the evening, then the last ferry back to Ceiba and the drive to San Juan. One we checked in September 2026 charged $200 per person, took the 9:30 PM ferry back, and reached San Juan around 11:30 PM.

Read the conditions before booking one:

• It only works with the first tour slot. Later departures finish after the last ferry leaves, so doing this on your own means booking the earliest tour and a return ferry ticket, and getting from the bay to the terminal in time.
• The ferry decides, not the tour company. The package we checked says plainly that it does not control the ferry schedule. A cancelled or rescheduled sailing ends the plan.
• Packages need a minimum group. The one we checked needs six guests to run and will cancel or reschedule if it does not fill.
• It is a long day. Roughly twelve hours door to door for a tour of one to two hours.

Why an overnight is still the better plan

Staying one night on Vieques lets you pick any tour time rather than the earliest one, removes the ferry risk from the night of your tour, and gives you a buffer if weather pushes the tour to the next evening. It also turns a twelve-hour transit day into a day on an island with its own beaches.

Getting around once you’re there

Vieques is a real island with limited public transportation. Most visitors rent a car, a Jeep, or use local taxis (públicos) to get around, including to and from your tour’s meeting point. Confirm with your accommodation or your tour operator what transportation options exist for your specific dates.

Where tours depart from

The Mosquito Bay operators featured on this site depart from a few different points on the island, mostly around Esperanza and Isabel Segunda. None of them offers San Juan pickup; the same-night packages above are sold by separate San Juan companies.
