Laguna Grande is about 45 minutes from San Juan by car, the only bio bay you can realistically visit as a day trip.

Field entry · Last verified July 15, 2026

Laguna Grande, in Fajardo, is the closest of Puerto Rico’s three bioluminescent bays to San Juan, about 45 minutes by car under normal traffic. It is the only one of the three you can do as a same-day trip from the capital.

Getting there

Drive time from San Juan is roughly 45 minutes via PR-66 and PR-53. If you are not renting a car, most tour operators offer transportation options from San Juan hotels for an additional cost, worth asking about directly when you book, since not every operator includes it by default.

No overnight required

Unlike Vieques, you can drive to Fajardo, take your evening kayak tour, and drive back to San Juan the same night. Tours typically run one to two hours, so plan for a return drive sometime after 9 or 10pm depending on your departure time.

Where tours depart from

Most operators featured on this site meet in the Las Croabas area of Fajardo, near what is often called Kayak Village. Two of them offer San Juan pickup for an additional cost: Puerto Rico Access Tours, and Pure Adventure PR for groups of four or more (call to confirm). The rest are self-drive only.

What the tour itself involves

Laguna Grande tours are kayak-only, no motorboats, paddling through a dark mangrove channel before opening into the lagoon itself. This is a good option if you want the bio bay experience without a long drive or an overnight stay, and it is a reasonably approachable paddle for most fitness levels, though you should be comfortable sitting in a kayak for an hour or more.

Planning around the moon

The trip is short enough that you can plan around the calendar’s best nights without much advance commitment. Check the moon calendar for the current best-window dates before booking.
